One can turn the crowd on with electric guitar licks and become, behind the scenes, another singer during karaoke. Here are a couple of famous rock singers well known for practicing karaoke during their free time.
- Yannis Philippakis (Foals), fan of… « You’re The Voice », as made famous by John Farnham
« It's quite an 80's ballad. There's a key change right in the middle of the song and I love it. Also, it's in my pitch. I love to sing this song after a couple of warm overpriced Saké, in front of a crowd of hysterical girls, when I'm travelling through Shibuya in Japan. »
- Ray Davies (The Kinks), fan of… « All Day And All Of The Night », as made famous by The Kinks
« I was in Austin, Texas, at SXSW. I went to a Korean karaoke bar with 2 friends and I chose ‘All Day And All Of The Night’ (a classic of his band, the "Kinks"). Nobody recognized me. I guess the Kinks are not that famous in Korea… »
- Brett Anderson (Suede), fan of… « Strangers In The Night », as made famous by Frank Sinatra
« Crooners songs are always easy to cover in karaoke. I would choose "Strangers In The Night" or "The Windmills of Your Mind". Back when I was playing with Bernard Butler in The Tears, we played in Japan. That's where we had karaoke sessions with a little bit too much alcohol. It was hilarious. We invited Ian Brown (The Stone Roses), because we were playing in the same festival, but he couldn't get a note out. »
- Mark Foster (Foster The People), fan of… « Take On Me », as made famous by A-Ha
« I try to avoid karaoke. I'm the kind of guy being stressed and I am completely frozen on stage, as surprising as it sounds. However, I went once to a karaoke for a friend's birthday and I sang "Take On Me". It fixed everything! I chose this song because everyone that sang before me chose depressing songs. I figured I would help get the party started. »
- Joe Mount (Metronomy), fan of…« Bullet With Butterfly Wings », as made famous by The Smashing Pumpkins
« I can sing any karaoke song, I have no shame. However, I'm best at singing Billy Corgan's songs, from the Smashing Pumpkins. I do a great impression. »
- Marky Ramone (The Ramones), fan of… « Any Way You Want It », as made famous by The Dave Clark Five.
« I love this song. We played it with The Ramones and Eddie Vedder as a guest singer, during a concert at Palace Theatre of Los Angeles. It was the last song of our set. »
