As with anything popular, karaoke does hold several surprising records, as with the ones our team has selected below.
The longest karaoke ever held by a single person lasted 101 hours, 59 minutes and 15 seconds. Leonardo Polverelli achieved this incredible feat at the Astra Caffe in Pesaro (Italy) between September 19 and 23, 2011. During this session he sang about 1,295 songs, and the fundraiser held for this occasion benefited the Lions Club.
The same feat has been achieved by several people and lasted 781 hours and 31 minutes in Staffordshire (England), which equals 32 days between December 30, 2009 and February 1st, 2010.
On August 22, 2009, the largest worldwide karaoke was held attracting 160,000 persons at Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol (Tennessee), during the beginning of a NASCAR race. The crowd sang a unique song « Friends In Low Places » by Garth Brooks. They broke the previous record set in 2008 by 80,000 fans of the band Lordi, winner of Eurovision 2 years before that.
In the same vein, on December 11, 2009, 10,940 people gathered at Los Premios 40 Principales in Madrid, Spain to create a giant choir in front of a karaoke video game.
Even crazier, a promotional campaign organized by the airway company JetBlue, featured the largest karaoke...with lyrics referencing planes. The show lasted 240 minutes.
« Heavy Rotation », 17th record of the Japanese female collective AKB48, entered Oricon, the Japanese karaoke charts, on September 13, 2010 ranking 12th. The track then reached number one on November 1st, and kept the spot for the following 48 weeks breaking the previous record held by the band Orange Range with "Hana".
